§ 8. General elections; terms; consolidation of offices in one person.
Elections shall be held every two (2) years in conjunction with Federal general elections on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, and run-off elections, if needed, shall be held on the third Tuesday in December. All officers shall be elected by a majority of votes cast and the officers shall be sworn into office on the first (1st) Tuesday of the following month. The town council, composed of one (1) mayor-councilman and four (4) councilmen, shall run in five (5) groups. In 1970, groups one (1) and two (2) shall he elected for four (4) year terms and groups three (3), four (4) and five (5) shall be elected for two (2) year terms. After the expiration of the aforesaid terms members of the town council shall be elected to four (4) year terms. The mayor-councilman shall be the candidate elected in group five (5). The town council may by ordinance provide that one (1) and the same person may hold, and may appoint one (1) and the same person, to hold two (2) or more of the following offices: the offices of town clerk, town treasurer, town collector of taxes, town registration officer, town tax assessor and any other office that may be created by ordinance.
The terms of the two (2) council seats elected in January 2010 shall end in November 2014. The terms of the two (2) council seats and mayor elected in 2012 shall end in November 2016.

At an election held on Jan. 12, 2010, the voters approved Referendum No. 1 which amended the charter so the town's election occurs at the same time as federal elections. This referendum was put before the voters by Ord. No. 2009-07, adopted on May 12, 2009.
